Why We Exist

The Mission

American Houndsman exists to serve the people who run dogs. Not the casual observer. Not the armchair enthusiast. The houndsman who's up at 3 AM, who knows every one of his dog's baying voices, who measures a good weekend by miles of track and hours under stars.

We built this community because we couldn't find the one we needed. Every resource we found was either too generic, too commercial, or too far removed from what it actually means to be in the field. So we built our own.

How We Got Here

The Story

It started the way most things in the hunting world start โ€” around a tailgate, with a thermos of bad coffee, arguing about whose dog was better. The founders of American Houndsman had been running together for a decade, and after years of watching the online conversation around hound hunting fragment into disconnected Facebook groups and dying forums, they decided to build something better.

The first version launched in the spring of 2019 out of a rented office in Nashville, Tennessee with three people and no budget for marketing. Word spread the old-fashioned way: houndsman to houndsman, at field trials and night hunt camps across the Southeast.

Today, American Houndsman is the largest dedicated online community for hound hunters in North America. We cover 38 states, support 180+ breed profiles, and publish a monthly print magazine that ships to members' doors. The mission hasn't changed: build the resource we all wished existed, and put the community first in every decision.

What We Stand For

Our Values

๐Ÿ•
Dogs First, Always

Every decision we make starts with the question: is this good for the dogs and the people who run them? We don't chase trends or build for optics. We build for the houndsman in the field at 2 AM.

๐Ÿค
Community Over Commerce

We're member-supported. We don't take paid placements, we don't allow sponsored content to masquerade as editorial, and we don't sell your data. The community pays for itself because it's genuinely worth paying for.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ
Honest, Unfiltered Knowledge

We say what we think. Our gear reviews are real. Our trail reports are accurate. Our forum culture rewards expertise over ego. If something doesn't work, we'll tell you โ€” even if we sell it.

๐ŸŒฒ
Stewardship of the Tradition

Hound hunting is a tradition that stretches back centuries in America. We take that responsibility seriously โ€” preserving the knowledge, the breeds, the culture, and the public land access that makes it possible.
